Al-Kisai al-Kufi

Ali ibn Hamza al-Kisai al-Kufi (119–189 AH / 737–805 CE), one of the Ten canonical reciters and the leading grammarian of his age. He took the recitation from Hamza al-Zayyat and a group from Kufa and Madinah, and was a tutor to the sons of the Abbasid Caliph Harun al-Rashid.

Al-Kisai's qirāʾa bridges the Kufan and Medinan schools and is characterised by extensive imala (vowel inclination) of alif, ya, and ha, along with distinctive rulings on the ra and certain words.

Al-Kisai's qirāʾa historically spread in Iraq, Iran, and Khorasan. It is taught in Islamic qirāʾat centres across the world.
